I want to start a new profession because my gathering profession is to low of a level for the areas that I am in. I want to start a crafting profession and wanted to know what others think a good profession is and why.

No matter which profession you choose, you would have to start from scratch. So my advice is to pick one that will benefit your class.

Check what armor you wear and choose a profession accordingly:

Cloth wearer = Tailoring
Leather and Mail wearer = Leatherworking
Plate wearer = Blacksmithing

If you want to earn money, taking on dual gathering professions is also a good strategy. Sell the materials at the auction house and then wait till you’ve saved enough to drop one gathering profession in place of a crafting profession.

The herbs themselves can be difficult to find; Herbs are everywhere, but you have to look hard for them. A stack of 20 peacebloom or silverleaf can typically sell for 5 gold. Another great way to get gold when you are starting out is selling loot you get from monsters, especially linen and wool cloth. Collect as much as you can get and sell it at the auction house for a couple of pieces of gold. It doesnt cost anything to get and it will sell fast. These professions can be great moneymakers even if youre not starting out in world of warcraft, because people are more willing to buy the materials gathered by these professions to use in creating items. The gathering professions are time-consuming and can take you away from questing. You can choose only two professions, and it would be recommended that to those two primary professions are a combination of Mining, Skinning, or Herbalism.

Just started playing WoW again, I made a night elf hunter but what are the best professions for a hunter?

For overall class performance: Leatherworking and Skinning.
For earning WoW Gold: Skinning and Mining/Herbalism (choose one)
For fun PvP gear at end-game: Engineering and Mining

If you have the patience, take up two gathering professions while leveling up, preferably Skinning and Mining. This allows you to gather materials and earn WoW gold from selling your gathered materials like skins and ores. You will be able to buy all you need–mounts, riding skills, and other gear.

When you reach near 80 (or 85 in Cataclysm) and saved up WoW Gold, you can drop one or both gathering professions and take up Leatherworking and or Engineering. These will give you fun and useful items to use and wear.

iv tried a lot, i just want to try something random now. in your opinion, what is the best race/class, what is the best talent build for them, and what are good professions? i have no preferences, just what is your favorite?

I tend to lean toward the alliance though I know that is not really the popular answer… It all depends on what you want to do, but i feel that a druid is the best bet for you so if you want to be alliance Night Elf Druid, and if you choose feral you can dual spec to add healing… It is a very versatile class because as feral you can tank or dps (bear/cat)… I agree with the other person saying that leather working is a good prof, but if you want to make a lot of gold fast, inscription is a very profitable profession, my gf has an inscpriptionist and makes a lot of gold with it, so you would want herbalism with that. That would be a good way to try if you want

I know that there’s social guilds, raiding guilds, and PvP guilds, but is there such a thing as a profession guild in world of warcraft?
If there is, how does it function? Does it split profits between the members? Does the guild leader pay them monthly for their farming of resources and contributions to the guild? If you provide a link, that would be very much appreciated.
If there isn’t such a thing, could it be possible? Why and/or why not?

I’ve been playing since ‘04 and I can’t say that I have ever heard of such a thing.

Most mature guild share mats and work together when it comes to professions, to some degree. Guilds often have tabs just for crafting mats and patterns, and most people put their profession on their guild note so that people can contact them if they need something done.

So, if I understand correctly, what you are proposing is a guild where people with gathering professions put everything they gather in the guild bank; people with crafting professions take out all the mats and make it into finished products; then the guild leader takes out the finished products and sells them, dividing the gold evenly among the guild members.

The game really isn’t set up to do that on such a large scale. There is a whole lot of opportunity there for theft, ripping off, dishonesty etc, at almost every stage of the process.

Guilds have restrictions on who can take out items. They are normally limited to a couple of stacks, and only out of a tab or two, with less restrictions when they have been in the guild longer. If the whole point of the guild is exchange of mats, you can’t really employ this safe guard.
Any single person in the guild, whether disgruntled, hacked, or just a jerk, can make off with someone elses work at any time. If you restrict how many stacks they can take out, it would make it very ineffective to craft, since high-level recipes take 5 or more different types of items to make.
Crafters can keep extra procs, they could keep everything they make, craft items that are nearly worthless instead of crafting something that is worth more with the same mats, or craft the more expensive thing, sell them and put in the less expensive items.

The guild leader is the main issue with the idea; do you trust an anonymous person to honestly tell you exactly how much gold they made and evenly divide it amongst a bunch of strangers? It would be very easy to tell the guild the item sold for half the value it did. Or that half as many sold as actually did.

Not to mention that often, raw mats are worth more individually than what they are combined to create.

It’s quite common in any guild for a gatherer to make a similar deal with a crafter, if it’s one-on-one trading you can see more easily if you are being ripped off. And, you can explicitly say what the deal is- then if they ninja-log, you can put in a ticket and a gm will get your stuff back (ex. I am giving you materials and 10g for you to enchant scroll of whatever for me). In a guild where it is assumed that you can do whatever you wish with the mats, or that you can withdraw x number of stacks, it would be a massive headache to attempt to prove they scammed you, and to get the items back.

Patch 3.3.3a has files having to do with a new profession. On a sandbox, me and a friend enabled these files, allowing us to “use” the new profession. Really, most professions will be of use to you. If it is one of your first characters, it’s always a good idea to pick up a gathering profession or two for gold (mining, skinning, herbalism)

If you are looking for professions that give you a bonus in end-game though.. There are still a lot that are awesome.
Leatherworking- not only lets you make mail armour, but will give you a potent wrist enchant.
Jewelcrafting- will give you the best gems in-game, and the little bonus of +16 spell power per gem (3 max) can really add up (or whatever stat you are gemming for). Also you can make nice trinkets with it.
Enchanting- not only lets you chant up your gear cheaper, it lets you make a lot of gold off of chanting mats from instances. You also can enchant your rings for a bonus.
Engineering gives you all sorts of random goodies like repair bots. It also gives you good trinkets, epic goggles, and an awesome haste cloak enchant.
Inscription- Lets you save on glyphs, as well as potent shoulder enchants.

The so-so profs would be
Blacksmithing- gives you two extra sockets. That can be a lot of extra stats, but that sure is an expensive profession to level for only that bonus (you don’t make high-level mail with BS)
Tailoring- has nice spellthread (pant enchant lol) and cloak enchant, but again you don’t really make items you will be using much.
