It depends on what you LIKE. Rogues have this horrifying problem with constantly being made to stare at the backside of other players and enemies.

For mages, gnomes are definitely the best class (5% int bonus = more mana and more spell crit).

Every player is going to have bias – I'm biased towards mages, because I have two level 80 mages (one on a PvE server and my PvP mage), and I love playing them so much.

I don't like melee classes. My first toon was a rogue, and after 2 years I just couldn't stand there and whack things with swords anymore, but rogues and hunters are good for new players to learn about the basic mechanics of WoW (aggro circles, non-aggressive mobs, pull patterns, threat mechanisms). I'd probably go with one of those to start. :)
