It is technically possible, but prohibited by Blizzard, and you can potentially be banned or deleted if caught.

It is possible, but it is prosecuted by Blizzard and may lead them to suspend your account if they find out. There are various reasons for doing this, but the one which should interest you most is the source of this gold.
There are companies in third-world countries which force children to play WoW 16 hours a day with no pay, just in order to grind gold. Then they sell that gold to Western players. It is no better than sweat-shop-factories for clothing, and maybe worse, because it relies more on child labour. BTW that's the source of the term "China farmer" you may encounter in-game.
Don't take it as a problem that you don't have much gold. With my first char, I had to wait to 43 to gather those 90 gold for the first mount. Now I am playing my third and I have 115 gold at 33, without any connections whatsoever (my other chars are on other servers, so I didn't transfer anything). Money comes with experience. Besides, there has been a real inflation since BC, things cost in AH twice their old price. Try selling things in the auction house (get some pricing addons if you don't know what is worth how much) and do quests in areas which are suitable for your level, then yo'll get much money as rewards. Try Tanaris (that's south of Thousend Needles and has both Horde and Alliance quests), there you'll find good quests at level 40.
And another one: try leveling more slowly, with more quests, less instances, and no grinding, and you'll have more money each level.

I've bought gold from the online gold sellers a few times, and it was always an easy transaction. Worst case was about 12 hours to get the gold. There are sites that review the sellers so you can find out which ones are reliable.
I can't comment on the 'sweat shop' accusation. Sure, everyone knows about the Chinese gold farmers, and most of the sellers use this "farmed" gold. Blizzard does not allow this, but in reality it's very hard to get caught and sometimes an extra 10 or 100gp is just what you need! Some will argue that the game should be played the way it was created – i.e. you need to quest, kill, loot, etc. to "earn" your way to big gold. To them, the "getting there" is the best part. For others, the best part is "being there", i.e. playing without having to go thru the insanely boring grinding sessions or whatever it takes to make a ton of gold.
If you feel a moral obligation NOT to buy the gold and play WoW 100% legit, then suck it up and play. If you want a quick fix, just go ahead and buy some! I won't think bad about you if you do.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. You don't need to grind for gold, and you don't need to buy it from farmers.
If you have 3 gold, you have enough to learn to farm the Auction House. Find items that are priced a bit low, and buy them and then turn around and imediately sell them at a higher price than what you paid.
Items that are good to do this with are Enchanting Materials, because there is no deposit that must be made with them when you post them to the Auction House. Therefore, if the item does not sell, you do not lose any money from your deposit.
However, if you only have 3g it will be hard for you to find many Enchanting Materials that people want to buy from the AH. Look at gems and ore. If you can find a Jade, or Moss Agate or any number of various gems for 50 silver or less, then buy it and imediately turn it around and sell it for 99 silver.
The key to successfully doing this is to find out what items are in your price range that are in high demand on your server, but have a wide range of prices. You buy the low end priced items and them post them for the next lowest price range.
Example. There are 15 Moss Agate for sale on the AH all seperately. The high price is 2g each and the low price is 40s each. There are three for 40s and the next lowest after that is 1g each. The remaining 12 are all 1-2g each. Buy the three for 40s and post them on the AH for 99s. I promise you that after you have done that, you'll have an extra 2g to your name in profit.
