What is the best thing to farm in World of Warcraft to make Gold?
By admin | November 20, 2009
I recently started fishing in Wintergrasp for fish because it seems i can catch 3-5 fish per minute all which go for 1-2 gold each usually. I also am a herbologist but it seems that flying around looking for herbs just doesn’t bring in as much as fishing. What else can i farm that will make me more money than fishing? What about farming for cloth? Any ideas?
Basic Gold Farming
Gold is “farmed” in four different ways: farming NPCs for drops that sell on the auction house, farming herbs/ore/skins/shards and selling them on the auction house, playing the auction house, or doing daily quests.
Let’s look at gathering first.
Gathering & professions
Gathering is a very simple way to get gold. You basically just need a flying mount, level 80, and time. Mount up and fly around gathering herbs or ore. Skinning requires the death of animals, which takes time, but involves little searching. Take these items and sell them on the auction house on Tuesday (when demand is the highest) for whatever the going rate is on your server.
Of course, there are tricks to get more money out of your resources. You can convert the resources into items with your professions and get more money out of them. Darkmoon Cards sell for a ton and require you to simply mill your gathered herbs and add in some parchment. Glyphs, especially in demand ones, can sell for 20-30 gold while selling the herbs would get you nowhere near that much.
Milling, prospecting, and “enhancing” some resources can produce higher prices as well. For instance, a stack of 20 Goldclover can go for 15g. You can mill it and produce 8 pigment which might sell for 25g. You may also get a rare pigment that will sell for 15g by itself.
The only profession that can’t generate income is Engineering because the only BoE item anyone wants is the motorcycle. That thing takes so much to put into that it’s not worth the time to even try to sell.
Farming NPCs
It is a method, but not a productive one. Some NPCs drop items that are needed for quests, that are vanity pets, or just items that are in demand. Each server is different. You’ll need to look on the auction house for items that are selling for a lot and are easy to get then go out and farm them. It’s a simple method that can be combined with gathering to produce some money. In modern times you may not find easy gold this way.

If you really want to farm things, fish are a very good option. Cloth is usually not worth it, a stack of cloth on my server sells for really cheap. However, if you just want to make gold, I’d highly advise doing daily quests. Just by doing the daily quests for the Argent Tournament, it’s entirely possible to make 150 gold in about 45 minutes, without much trouble. The problem with trying to farm herbs or ores is that hackers are now using compromised accounts with speedhacks to dominate the market for herbs, minerals, or leather.
Not knowing what your professions are, but if you’re looking for a very easy way to make money for a small amount of effort, I’d advise Jewelcrafting and Alchemy. Having them both at 450, you can (for example) buy a sky sapphire (around 5g on my server) and an eternal air (around 17g on my server) from the auction house, transmute them into a Majestic Zircon, cut into a Solid Majestic Zircon, and sell it (around 175g on my server).

It all depends on your class. If you’re level 80, go to icecrown in the northwestern plains. There are mobs there, usually a pack of 6 or 7. Aggro them and AoE. You get around 3 to 4 gold per mob. Go there for a while. I do it and make tons of gold. Instances are a good source of gold aswell.

I make most of my money from alchemy and enchanting, although I do sometimes sell ore on my death knight. (dont really farm tho, its boring) Alchemy lets you transmute epic gems once per day. You can buy the mats for the yellow and blue gems for around 20 g usually on ah, then sell the transmuted gem for 150. Also, farming reg toc and heroics for enchanting mats is a good way to make gold.
The best way to make gold is to have gold tho. Once you get a decent amount of gold, try to buy mats for common usage, such as abyss crystals, eternal fire, and other things for very low prices on AH and on trade chat. There is always someone who needs some quick gold and is willing to sell a stack of abyss crystals for nearly half the common price. Then resell these mats on ah for 1.2 times the normal price.
Hope that helps. Biggest thing is to be patient. Dont just sell stuff on AH for 1 copper lower than lowest price because sometimes, this is still lower than the common price.
