What is a good profession for a mage in WoW?
By admin | November 5, 2009
I’d like to ride mounts, but if I’ll be able to teleport as I level up, would I need a mount? Are there more useful professions for mages?
- also, if I choose riding as a profession, what else should I do?
Riding is a secondary Proffesion you arent limited on how many of those you can have, you can have them all, riding, fishing, cooking, first aid. Yes riding is pretty much a necessity. You can only port to the major cities, when out in the world riding will lett you get to quests, turn ins, etc much faster than walking.
As to you other professions. Many people take 2 gathering proffesions in order to make money while leveling versus spending money leveling a crafting proffesion. Mining, Herbalism, Skinning are your gathering proffesions. You can have 2 primary proffesions like gathering skills are.. Keep in mind though that if you are a miner and a flower picker that you use your mini map to track these items and you can only track one at a time. So if your looking for ore youd miss the flowers on the map. If you choose to take a crafting skill as well as a gathering instead of 2 gatherings, Tailoring youd be able to make your own gear, and cloth drops off a lot of mobs. Jewel crafting at end game youd get better gems . Alchemy make own potions and flasks. Inscription best shoulder enchantments at 80. Engineering improved head gear with goggles. Enchanting , enchant own gear, but expensive mats. Blacksmithing you would get extra sockets for gear @ high lvel. Main thing is if u choose something like Jc or Alchemy make sure ur other proffesion is the one going to give you what u need for the other one. Herbs- for alchemy, inscription. mining- for ore for jc, engineering, etc.
Personally I have an 80 mage and shes a tailor and skinner. I made my own gear and the skinning comes in handy for when i need leather for bags and for other toons or just to sell.

Well everybody loves mounts friends! And yes you will still need a mount to get where you are going. Your portal spell will only take you to major cities.
And proffesion wise, I would say Tailoring and Enchanting. Or herbalism and Alchemy

Definitely get the riding skill. You will still need it even if you can teleport. If you train for the riding skill, you can still get 2 professions of your choice, along with cooking, fishing, and first aid. For the two professions, i would suggest doing tailoring and herbalism, so as you level you can continue to be in updated gear. If you don’t want to do that, maybe you could do enchanting.

Riding is not a profession. You get it when you reach the appropriate level and pay for it. So don’t worry about that! And yes, you’ll want to get a mount even though you can teleport; you only teleport to capital cities, and you spend a lot more time in the rest of the world.
Almost anything could be useful for a mage; about the only exception would be blacksmithing, as you only wear cloth armor and don’t rely on weapons as much. Here are some useful combinations:
- tailoring and enchanting
- tailoring and skinning
- alchemy and herbalism
- inscription and herbalism
- jewelcrafting and mining
- engineering and mining
You can take only two, but you can have all of the secondary professions (first aid, cooking, fishing, and in the new expansion pack, archaeology). I would recommend taking them, as cooked food provides buffs, some of the best buffs come from fish, and first aid is always helpful.
