How Your Hunter Can Dominate World PvP

Even if your Hunter has avoided it in the past, PvP combat is in their future. Wrath of the Lich King transformed world of warcraft’s World PvP. There’s now a real time PvP battle zone called Lake Wintergrasp. There, the emphasis is on real-time World PvP. There players battle on the live server to earn points they can use to buy rare and valuable items, including the new Heirloom items that any character in their account regardless of that character’s level can use.
With Lake Wintergrasp’s high popularity, and the increasing amount of PvP combat in other popular games, there will surely be even more World PvP in the future. So let’s talk about Hunters and PvP:
Playing a Hunter class character in World of Warcraft Player versus Player combat requires many of the same skills real hunter possess. You need to be able to identify the target and understand its likely behavior so you can anticipate its next move. You also need to know your own capabilities and the capabilities of your gear. And you need to be able to maneuver to the right position to take down your foe before they can take you down.
But playing a hunter in PvP involves much more than that. You need to know when and how to deploy your Freezing and Frost Traps and essential crowd control devices is necessary but not enough. You also need to know how to manage the space between you and your opponents to cause the most possible DPS damage in each battle. And you must do all this against an intelligent character, rather than a wild animal.
To truly succeed in Hunter PvP combat, you need to understand the behavior of each class of opponent and have a strategy for dealing with them. It’s particularly important to understand how druids, Warriors, and Rogues are most likely to approach you. At the same time, you have to have a strategy for countering quick charges into hand-to-hand combat range by Warriors and Rogues.
Learning what you need to know on your own is possible if you put in enough time in the arena. But I can tell you from personal experience that if you try, you had better be prepared to get crushed and humiliated for a long time. I spent many frustrating hours ranking last or near last in the standings when I tried. It wasn’t until I picked up a Hunter PvP Guide that I was able to make real progress.
