I honestly like the way the world looks now rather than the hellish way the world would look if I were to buy it. So would there be any way around this, or would I just be stuck with the new world design?

The enviromental changes are going to happen even if you dont buy the game. Blizzard is going to gradually add the changes so that all players view the same thing. You will start to see some minor changes coming shortly.
