World of Warcraft playing a mage?
By admin | June 22, 2009
Okay heres the thing, I recently got a world of warcraft account and I think the first character I want to play is a mage. So there are some questions I want to know before I start.
1st: How well do Mages do in parties (Damage)
2nd: Are we wanted in raids?
Thats all thanks.
I have a lvl 66 mage right now and i think they are fun
1.) they do very well in parties, they are definitely the best dpsers in the game, depends what spec though
fire- is a very good damage spec you can be doing 8 k crits at lvl 80 but its more slow therefore not taht great for pvp.
frost- awsome for pvp because you have the water elemental the ability to slow people down with your attacks, the ice barrier which absorbs damage and you can get a talent to make it so that when it absorbs all the damage it frost nova's everyone around you and you can blink away. also ice lance.
arcane- is a mix between both, arcane barrage good instant cast but arcane missles and more mana regeneration, it does good damage definitly not as much as fire..but still alot.
So pretty much frost is pvp spec..fire is pve spec (dungeons and stuff)…and arcane is raid spec..
2.) i think they are very good in raids i would definitly get a mage in my raid group if i was having a raid they can port you guys to places and can do alot of damage, conjure some food, give some buffs..

Mages are great damage dealers. How well they do in parties all depends on the person playing.
Wanted in raids? Sure! Arcane Intel, sheepies, conjured water, end of raid teleport. People love mages.

A mage could be a little hard to start off. But they are very useful. They do a very good job with. damage (if you are the right spec and now how to play well) Don't worry about that though, because if you get all the way to 80 with your mage… you will learn.
And yes, they are crazy dps'ers!
Only drawback is they are squishy; meaning they die easily, but that's only If you don't defend yourself correctly; they can't keep taking hits.
But yeah.. I'd say go for it.

Ok, depending on how you go with your mage depends on the answer. I have a lvl 45 Fire mage. I DPS really good and can aggro in a group where I am not the lowest lvl, even from a distance. So that says something if the target feels I am the biggest threat and someone is wailing on it. I am thinking that if I ever save the money, my dual spec will be frost since it is equally powerful. As for raids, DPS is always needed. Just as long as you learn how to handle your self and can do the damage.

First off, a mage is limited to only cloth type armor, which doesn't really matter because a mage is the best character in the game with range damage so if an enemy can't get close enough to do damage why would you need heavy armor right? As with raids a mage is known as DPS (damage per second) and is a very wanted class on my server. In my opinion I would take a mage over a rogue in a raid group simply because a mage can do exelent damage while staying out of melee range. So I think a Madge is a great class to start with.

Both of your questions are PvE (Player vs. Environment) related. Have you put in thought to the PvP (Player vs Player) aspect of the game yet?
All three mage specs are damage dealing ones, Fire was where it was at in BC not so sure now but I can't really see it being any less viable. On the PvP side of things fire is the weakest of the three specs as it has very little in terms of damage mitigation.
Arcane has recieved major upgrades since the release of Wrath, I'm not sure how it's damage compares to fire in a raid environment but I'm certain it would be acceptable. PvP wise with the arrival of Wrath Arcane rivals the old standby of frost. Arcane hits ultra hard and with the addition of slow you have some leeway in terms of escaping/kiting.
Frost is almost non-existent in PvE. Though PvP is a whole nother story. Frost has long been the undiputed king of PvP specs for mages, the burst damage potential is there with shatter, and cold snap allows for even more escape/mitigation.
When looking at Mages in a group setting, they will be wanted primarily for the purpose of CC (Crowd Control ie. sheep). Few groups would turn down a mage if presented with one, the exceptions being a heavy melee group composition, RL friends, another mage already in the group and a few others. On the whole mages are solid but with the ever dwindling diffculty in instances, are not sought after.
With some finality I can say that Mages are a solid choice for a starting character. At end game they are viable in all aspects of gameplay, raiding, PvP, and instances.

Mages do good damage, it depends on your spec really, overall they do good and are wanted for raids. With the sudden flood of Death Knights there aren't as much ranged DPS. If this is your first time playing, I would recommend not though, Mages are easier to level up if you know how to play well.
